The process & How it works:
Apply for a marriage license
You’ll go through Hennepin County Marriage License Office to apply. There’s usually a short waiting period, so plan ahead.
Schedule your civil ceremony
Ceremonies are held right inside the Government Center. They’re short, sweet, and officiated by a judge.
Hire a photographer!
This day goes by so quickly—and it deserves to be remembered just as intentionally as any other wedding day. Instead, you get to be fully present, knowing every little moment is being documented.

Do you have to use a judge they provide?
No, you do not! You can request to bring someone else in to marry you.
Where do we take photos after our ceremony?
Inside the courthouse itself, the architecture is beautiful and clean—perfect for timeless, minimal portraits. Just outside, you’re right in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, with so many nearby options within walking distance. From modern city streets and architectural details to riverfront views and nearby parks, there’s no shortage of variety for photos that feel natural, elevated, and true to the day.
Do you have to reserve the space to shoot there?
For elopement ceremonies, yes, if you want to do engagement photos, you can go there anytime during business hours without a permit or reservation.
Do we need witnesses?
Yes, Minnesota requires two witnesses for your marriage license. If you’re eloping just the two of you, this is something to plan ahead for. I have also been a witness to a marriage license. If you want it to be a complete secret, you can hire witnesses through your judge!
